CDR Maguire provided value-engineering services for the replacement of the Barton Corner Bridge in Rhode Island, earning the design-build contractor the maximum incentive bonus of over $700,000.
The bridge carrying I-95 over Route 2 was rolled into with accelerated bridge construction (ABC) techniques in two, 45-minute sessions when the twin, 900,000-pound superstructures were rolled into place using Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMTs). By rolling the bridge into place, Rhode Island DOT avoided inconveniencing the riding public for months or even years.
CDR Maguire assisted D’Ambra Construction with value-engineering proposals, environmental submittals, temporary structures, computer analysis of the superstructure during the move, and ongoing assistance as the innovative proposal went through the approval process. Thanks to our expertise and experience on other ABC projects, as well as a contractor willing to implement new innovation, the bridge took nine months to build off-site and only 90 minutes to move into place.
